Billions of Bricks: A Counting Book about Building by Kurt Cyrus

Grab a hard hat and your tools, and get ready for a construction adventure in counting!

A brick may seem like just a simple block, but in groupings of ten, twenty, and more, they can create many impressive structures – from streets to schools to skyscrapers and more!

Contrary to what it says on the front cover, this isn’t really a counting book. You are welcome to try to count all the bricks, but it will take you forever. In my opinion, this is more of a Where’s Waldo/I Spy sort of book.

During your first reading, pay attention to all the bricks. Take a moment to appreciate all the time and patience it took the author/illustrator to draw all these bricks.

During your second reading, pay close attention to the construction workers. I had way too much fun finding all the recurring characters throughout the book. Here are a few to keep an eye out for:

  • Little boy carrying one brick
  • Lady pushing a moving dolly
  • Man wearing green overalls carrying a ladder
  • Two men sitting and eating

This book reminds me of the time my brother-in-law made a driveway out of bricks and ordered way too many bricks. He had to come up with creative ways to use them up. I still tease him about this. I even wrapped up a brick and gave it to him for Christmas.

I recommend this book to kids interested in construction and bricklaying.
