Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds

Jasper Rabbit loves carrots—especially Crackenhopper Field carrots.
He eats them on the way to school.
He eats them while going to Little League.
He eats them while walking home.
Until the day the carrots start following him . . . or are they?

I was pleasantly surprised by this story. I like how the orange carrots pop out against the black and white illustrations that make the story feel like an old horror film.

What makes this story unique is that it’s an actually scary story for young readers. This isn’t one of those Halloween-based picture books that features mummies, skeletons, or ghosts. Just because a story has iconic monsters doesn’t really make it scary. This story, on the other hand, has all the elements a scary story needs: spooky atmosphere, suspense, and a twist.

This week’s Weird but True Facts about Carrots

If you eat too many carrots, your skin can turn orange.

Cooked carrots are more nutritious than raw ones.

Until about 500 years ago, farmed carrots were every color but orange; most were purple.

Baby carrots aren’t actually young carrots, they’re ugly ones that have been carved into smaller pieces.
