Shallow Graves by Kali Wallace

WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS SCENES OF GRAPHIC VIOLENCE AND BRUTAL DEPICTIONS OF PARANORMAL HORROR.

READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious, and she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past.

Haunted by happy memories from her life, Breezy sets out to find answers in the gritty, threatening world to which she now belongs. Where killers hide in plain sight, and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she discovers is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.

This book had me from the first sentence.

“The first time I killed a man, it was an accident.”

If that sentence doesn’t grab your full attention, this is not the book for you.

Breezy is a strong and intelligent protagonist. She’s spent her whole life knowing exactly what she wanted and how she would do it. Now she has come back from the dead and is thrust into a world where she doesn’t know anything. She doesn’t know what she is or who did this to her. And she wants answers.

I wish more of the focus was on Breezy’s ability to sense if someone is a killer. Now there’s an unusual ability. But the story kept twisting and turning in different directions that were hard to follow.

Spoiler: the story ends with many questions left unanswered. It’s frustrating when you pour so much time into a story only to be left hanging in the end. I wish Kali Wallace would write a sequel. I want to learn more about this paranormal fantasy world she has created.

I recommend this book to fans of iZombie, Supernatural, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
