Simon and Chester Graphic Novels Books 4 – 5 by Cale Atkinson

WARNING: This review contains spoilers! If you haven’t read Sir Simon: Super Scarer and the first three Simon and Chester graphic novels, DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW!

Simon and Chester: Super Friends!

Join Simon and Chester in their fourth adventure as they navigate friendship, jealousy, and new friends.

Introducing your human friend to your ghost friend is never easy, especially when your human friend is prejudiced against ghosts. This is Chester’s situation with his ghost friend, Simon, and his human friend, Amie.

Simon is understandably upset with Simon for hiding his existence and angry about Amie’s hurtful accusations about ghosts.

If you read the third book, you already know that Amie’s dad is a ghost catcher. I had no idea how the author would continue with this storyline. I thought each book would have its own individual story of Simon and Chester goofing off in the attic. I wasn’t expecting this series to have a continuing storyline, especially one this serious.

Simon and Chester: Super Frenemies!

Join Simon and Chester in their fifth and most daring adventure yet!

While saving Simon from a ghost trap, Chester gets trapped instead. Now Simon and Amie must work together to save Chester before the containment unit is emptied . . . into the void! Will they save him in time?

WOW! I was not expecting this level of intensity.

Simon and Amie spent most of the story butting heads and insulting each other. It’s the classic “I don’t like you, and you don’t like me, but we both have a common goal, so we have to work together” trope.

After finishing this book, I have no idea what direction the story will go. The big reveal of why Amie’s father is a ghost catcher was unsatisfying, to say the least. I’m hoping for more explanation in the next book.

I hope Simon will eventually be introduced to Chester’s grandma in a future book. She could freak out or welcome him with open arms. It would be funny if it turns out that she’s known about Simon the whole time and just didn’t say anything.
