The Last Kids on Earth and the Forbidden Fortress (The Last Kids on Earth #8) by Max Brallier

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!

Picking up after Quint and Dirk’s Hero Quest, the Last Kids are happily reunited—but quickly faced with a monstrous new mission. Inside an other-dimensional fortress, the evil Thrull, alongside a vile new villain, is carrying out a sinister plan. Jack, Quint, June, and Dirk must make their own plans to infiltrate the Fortress before Thrull gets any closer to completing the mysterious Tower, a structure that could ultimately spell doom for this dimension.

Let’s start this review off with a little recap:

Thrull needs information from Ghazt’s brain to complete the Tower to bring Rezzoch to Earth. While on the buddy side quest, Dirk and Quint learn about the Fortress, where Skaelka and the Drakkor were held prisoner and tortured. So now that the kids and Skaelka have regrouped, their mission is to infiltrate the Fortress, get the information that Thrull needs, destroy it, and then destroy the Fortress.

Overall, the stakes have never been higher.

This is where the story takes a very dark and grotesque turn. These kids have been through some horrifying and stressful situations, but the Fortress is truly traumatizing. Despite all the distressing horror, the kids still manage to have a sense of humor.

Book 9 will be coming out in Fall 2023. I don’t know if Book 9 will be the final book or if Max Brallier will prolong the series for another two or more books. At this point, I just want the kids to find some other humans.

I do know that there will be a spin-off graphic novel series called ‘The Last Comics on Earth’ coming out on February 18, 2023. I don’t think this graphic novel will include anything canon relating to the main series. I think it’s supposed to be fun nonsense to counteract the horror of this book.
