The Last Kids on Earth: Quint and Dirk’s Hero Quest (Last Kids on Earth #7.5) by Max Brallier

June Del Toro went on a wild flight in a super-rad solo episode.

Now get ready for the dynamic duo: it’s Quint and Dirk!

Picking up after the events of The Last Kids on Earth and the Doomsday Race, adventure abounds as the best buddies encounter new monsters and embark on a post-apocalyptic quest for the ages.

Yes, I know. The summary doesn’t give much detail. Or any details besides saying that it stars Quint and Dirk on their own side adventure. Since June got her own book, I expected Quint and Dirk would get their own books somewhere down the line. I thought they would get their own separate book, but a buddy adventure is cool too.

Anyway, the story’s overall plot is shown right in the title. Hero Quest. The story is basically a classic medieval fantasy quest where the heroes are hired by a village to slay a monster. A standard hero’s journey story template.

Personally, I enjoyed Quint and Dirk’s buddy adventure more than June’s solo adventure. I love the unlikely friendship between these two total opposites. They have grown quite close since Book 1, forming an almost brotherly bond.

I loved the new monsters. One is peppy and a telepath, while the other one reminded me of Gilderoy Lockhart from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Book 8 will be coming out this Fall, titled “The Forbidden Fortress.” This story’s arc gets more intense with each book. I have no idea what direction this story is going. I just hope it doesn’t get too elaborate. Nothing ruins a story more than an overly complicated, hard-to-follow plot.
