The Pumpkin Princess and the Forever Night by Steven Banbury

HAPPY OCTOBER!

Let’s start with the perfect book to get into the Halloween spirit.

On Halloween, it is always wise to expect the unexpected, but no amount of planning could have prepared Eve for that particular night. Fleeing an unpleasant orphanage, she’s saved by someone who she never believed was real . . . the fabled Pumpkin King himself.
Throwing caution aside, Eve accepts the offer to become his daughter and is whisked away to the misty Hallowell Valley—home to witches and vampires, ghosts and goblins, and all that go bump in the night. But just when she believes she’s found her place among the undead, a sinister scheme unearths itself, threatening to take everything from Eve unless she can stop it.

I absolutely loved this book! It’s the ultimate October read! Perfect for those obsessed with all things Halloween!

I have no idea what time period this story takes place in. When Eve talks about the human realm, she never talks about cars, computers, or phones. In Hallowell, candles are used instead of electricity. Pumpkin King drives a horse-drawn carriage. The time period is irrelevant.

I love the father/daughter relationship between the Pumpkin King and Eve. The Pumpkin King may look intimidating, but he’s a big softie. It amazed me how quickly he accepted Eve as his daughter and how much he wants to be a good father. He even reads a parenting book.  After her time in the orphanage, it takes Eve a while to get used to being wanted. The Pumpkin King is good at reassuring Eve about all her worries and concerns.

Overall, this is a spooky yet heartwarming tale about found family, friendship, and overcoming your fears. I have my fingers crossed for a second book. The world of Hallowell still has many more stories to tell.
